It’s no secret that photographs play an important role in the guest’s booking decision.

Customers want to rest assured that they’ve found the ideal hotel for the best price. To feel secure with a purchase as intangible as a future overnight stay, they need concrete evidence that they’re making the right choice. Accurate descriptions, online reviews, and photos work together to provide that sense of security for travelers shopping online. And not necessarily in that order.

As the old adage goes, a picture tells a thousand words. It’s no surprise then that the success of your listing depends heavily on its visual content. More specifically, the main image on your hotel profile on trivago matters a lot—to the travelers scanning their hotel search results, and therefore to your business. If you want to know how to upload a main image to trivago for your hotel that will grab guests’ attention and win their confidence, read on.

You absolutely have to have a main image

First impressions are everything. Your main listing photo is the first point of contact between the traveler and your accommodation. If it’s not appealing, it will be the last as well.

Your main image can also influence how much a guest is willing to spend. Let’s put ourselves in the customers’ shoes. We’re traveling and want to make sure the hotel we choose does not disappoint. We search trivago for the location with our desired dates. Let’s imagine the search generates two hotel profiles—and neither has a picture.

In this case, we’d probably book the hotel with the better reviews and lower price. Yet, this might not be the case if we were to see main images of the accommodations. Would you be willing to book the slightly more expensive hotel if you could see from the main image that it’s much nicer than the other? You probably would. So would your potential guests.

How to select the best image

Your goal is to tell your hotel’s story. The idea is not so much to simply have a gorgeous main image, as to have one that truly conveys the character of your property—accuracy counts as much as esthetics.

Quality counts for a lot as well. Here are some photographic aspects that make for a for a clean, crisp, and attractive main image:

  1. Well-lit and professional looking
  2. Recent and accurate
  3. Horizontal (landscape format)
  4. High-resolution (at least 2000 pixels wide)
